Rivers which divide, rivers which unite
The Pays de Redon straddles the 3 départements of Ille-et-Vilaine (35), Loire-Atlantique (44) and Morbihan (56) which were originally the dioceses of Rennes, Nantes and Vannes. Their borders are rivers which flow through the Redon area.
The history of Brittany is an extremely interesting subject and our region has often been at the forefront of events ! In bygone days rivers formed natural boundaries between Gallic tribes, then between the Duchy of Brittany and the Kingdom of France : Warog and Ebrachaire in the Rieux Marshes (Château discovery trail), Nominoé against Charles the Bald at the Battle of Ballon in 845 (at Bains-sur-Oust), then Erispoé near Grand Fougeray… right up to the so-called St Nazaire ‘pocket’ when Allied troops encircled the German occupants.
However, rivers connect land just as much as they divide it, providing a network for pleasure boating and walking along rediscovered towpaths and locks.
And as dawn breaks, why not leave your cosy B&B for a fishing trip aboard Didier’s boat, a « Brittany Experience » !
